He attended universities in Berlin, Munich, and Goettingen, and received his Doctorate in Science in 1939. A gifted and world-renowned scientist, he knew much about rocketry, space surveillance, and reentry physics. During World War II, he served in the German Air Force Reserve, where he did scientific research at the Aeronautical Research Station in Brunswick, and manned anti aircraft battery at night. He also saved the life of an American pilot who had been shot down.

After the war, he and his family moved to England where he worked for the Royal Aircraft Establishment, researching the spectroscopy of flames until 1956. He worked in the U.S. at the Bureau of Mines in Pennsylvania (1956-2004), the Thiokol Chemical Corp. in New Jersey, and finally, the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) in Virginia, where he retired in 1996.

He then served as a consultant at the Arnold Engineering Development Center in Tennessee. He authored and published more than 30 scientific papers during his career for which he received many honors and awards, including the Congressional Medal of Excellence. Known for his sense of humor, he was an avid gardener, and was particularly fond of roses.

He is also survived by his sons, Georg Wolfhard, and Bernd Wolfhard and his wife, Vicky, and Fred Ralston and his wife, Farris; grandchildren, Veronica Wolfhard, and Will & Jim Ralston.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelheid (Rhode) Wolfhard; sons, Burckhardt & John Wolfhard, and his parents, Albert Georg Wolfhard & Helen (Buerck) Wolfhard.

He was cremated and funeral services were conducted in Tennessee on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. Inurnment services followed on Thursday, July 10, 2008.
