Samuel attended Washington College in Lexington, Virginia (now Washington & Lee University) in 1843 and 1844. He married Alice "Alcey" Hairston, daughter of Samuel Hairston and Agnes Wilson, in Crawford, Lowndes County, Mississippi on 13 June 1849. By June 1860 they and son Harden were living in Henry County, Virginia. They also eventually were parents to Agnes, Samuel Jr., Ruth and Sarah.

Samuel was commissioned Major in the Confederate States service on 17 June 1862, serving on the staff of Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart before resigning on 31 March 1863. He was one of 62 killed in the collapse at the Virginia State Capitol in April 1870.
