The son of Henry August & Christiana (Bomberger) Schreiner, he married Jane Catherine "Jennie" Geety ca. 1859 and fathered Jacob (b. @1859), William Geety (b. 03/18/60), Catherine (b. @1864, d. 11/17/67), and Jennie 04/04/66 - married John Handiboe). In 1860, he was a self described gentleman (i.e., unemployed) living with his young family in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although his military records list him as a teacher.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Middletown August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry. On August 19 in Washington DC, he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant but honorably discharged per special order of the secretary of war to date January 17, 1863, reason as yet unknown.

Jennie died in 1867, and he married Hannah Hoffman, fathering Naoma (b. 12/17/69, d. 07/18/70).

Harrisburg Daily Independent, Saturday, June 16, 1877:
SCHREINER -- At the residence of his father, in Middletown, on the 15th inst., of pulmonary consumption, James R. Schreiner, in his 42d year.
Service in the Bethel church, Middletown at 1:30 o'clock on Sabbath afternoon. The remains will be interred in the Harrisburg Cemetery.

FIFTY YEARS AGO...
James R. Schreiner, once clerk in the Auditor General's office, Harrisburg, died at the home of his father, Middletown, the victim of tuberculosis contracted in the Civil War. He was 41 years old.
