W.H.S. Brown came to Carthage, Mo from
St. Louis, Mo in 1888 when he was 25 years old, making Carthage his headquarters for his position as a traveling salesman for the Bland Brothers Candy Company.
Sometime later, after marrying Miss Edna Caffee, he quit the work of traveling salesman and became associated with his father-in-law, Dr. Amos Caffee to engage in the wholesale drug business.
In 1902 he entered the drug business at Tahlaquah, Oklahoma continuing there for 12 years, when again took up his old profession as traveling salesman. He came to be employed by the E.C. Dewitt & Company, a Chicago, Illinois based drug firm.
Texas was his territory with this firm, but he and his wife Edna continued to make their home in Carthage, MO.

BLEW UP A STORE
W. H. S. Brown Tells How a Chief's Son Extinguished Himself
W. H. S. Brown returned today from a trip through the Indian Territory, and reports a sensational happening at Tulsa Monday night, which escaped notice in the telegraphic dispatches. Just after Mr. Brown arrived, a son of the chief of the Creek Nation, who was loaded with whiskey and painting the town red, stepped into the general store of T. J. Archer and spying the shining end of a 25 pound can of powder, fired into it. A terrific explosion followed which instantly killed the reckless chief, severely and probably fatally, wounded Mr. Archer, and totally wrecked the store.
Mr. Brown thinks the Territory is a wild and woolly country. At Ft. Gibson the other night he saw a female wearing a belt full of cartridges and revolvers, charging around among the men at the depot. She was in her bare feet, hand long flowing hair, and was a general desperado in appearance

1900: "Mr. and Mrs. W.H.S. Brown gave a neighborhood "taffy pull" at their residence on West Third street last evening, which was greatly enjoyed by all present.
The evening was spent in pulling taffy, cake walking, music and conversation. The refreshments consisted of candy, popcorn and fruits. Those present were Dr. and Mrs. A.H. Caffee, Mr. and Mrs. M.S. Parsons, Mesdames Lucy [Hood] Cunningham , F. V. Moore, Irene [Cunningham] Martin and Esther [Hood] Dinsmore , Misses Blanch Griswold, Jessie and Flora Caffee, Minnie Moore, Dick Hood, Marguerite Dinsmore and Nannie Snell, Messre. S.B. Griswold, Millard Bryan and Prof. Howland."
