Mary Jane Harris was born in Missouri on February 1, 1846 to James Guinn Harris and Elizabeth (Vineyard) Harris. She married at the age of 15 to James Harvey Burrows, who was killed about one year later by a falling horse. Shortly after his death, Mary Jane gave birth to his son, James Hiram Burrows. At the age of 21, she met and married Hamilton M. McNutt who had served under her brother-in-law, Capt. Hiram Mack Burrows in the 7th Texas Cavalry. When she had given birth to two girls and one boy, tragedy struck. The dreaded disease of Diphtheria was rampaging the country and all three children fell victim to the sickness. The two older children Edna and Lola Kate died, due to the inefficient administrations of the attending physician. After the girls were buried in the McNutt-Allen Cemetery and Hamilton realized his son Edgar was ill from the same disease, he started for the doctor once again, but Mary Jane refused to have the physician summoned for fear he would give him the same medication as he did her girls, and she nursed the child back to health and life, without any medication. Later, Mary Jane gave birth to another daughter, Elia and son, Hugh, which completed the family, five children in all.
