In Memoriam.
Died, near Kingston, Ga., Oct. 29, 1885, Mr. Obediah Owens, aged 63 years. He had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for forty years before his death.
That "death loves a shining mark" was perhaps never more fully illustrated than in the death of this noble man. It seems not extravagant to say that he was a flower in the garden of earth, so pure and fair, that God did not design that he should ever be withered by the frosts of sin; therefore he transplanted him in the garden of heaven and his bright spirit is now with God. By having gone to his beautiful home beyond the river of life "where the evil days shall come not," he has missed the cares, sorrows, trials and temptations of life, which those of us left behind must endure yet a while.
It would have been a source of great joy could he have been spared to go on with us in the weary journey of life; but instead of being a companion in the years to come the loved one will be remembered as "one of our dead." What does their absence teach us? It bids us to do the work they laid down, Take up the song where they broke off the strains! So journeying till we reach the heavenly town, Where are laid up our treasures and our crown; And our last loved ones will again be found.
These lines were written to the memory of the loved one and as a slight token of our sympathy for the broken-hearted wife and children. May he who hears the ravens when they cry be their comfort and shield through life. --- M. L. A.
