His father was a Baptist minister. Artemus learned the saddlers' trade with Joseph E. McDonald who later became a U.S. Senator. Upon coming to Monticello in 1862, he learned the printer's trade. while in school, he and J.B. VanBuskirk published a newspaper called The Jurior. The school's principal called them the "printer's devil." After school, he published the Constitutionalist. He was a member of the Indiana Newspaper Union. He moved to Indianapolis and wrote poems. One poem called The Old Tippecanoe was published when he died. His remains were brought back to Monticello.
