Schuyler was the son of James Harvey Adams (1842-1904) and Margaret Elizabeth Randolph (1849-1903). He was born in Dallas Township, town of Antioch, which is now Andrews. He was a fireman for the railroad in Bloomington, Illinois and in Kansas and then a conductor for the Missouri Pacific Railroad from Van Buren, Arkansas to Coffeyville, Kansas, until he retired.

About 1894 mostly likely in Brown County, Kansas, he married Elizabeth Ann Marriott. They had three children: Alva Cecil, Ina Mae, and Mary Maurine.
