John Jess Chilton Times September 26, 1908

Death of a Pioneer
On Sunday Sept. 20, John Jess died at his home in New Holstein at the age of 81 years, 6 months and 3 days. The deceased was born in Holstein, Germany, March 17, 1827 and remained in his native home until 1848 when he joined that sturdy band of pioneers who came to America in 1848 and located in the town of New Holstein. He purchased a tract of land and in 1851 was married to Katherine Eitler. They experienced all the hardships of the early days but with true perserverance they fought the battle and succeeded financially to a remarkable degree. He was a good citizen and was held in high esteem by all who knew him.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, Rev. Th. Schildknecht conducted the service. The remains were laid at rest in the family lot in the village cemetery. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Henry Seuel of New Holstein, Mrs. J. W. Piper of Charlestown and Mrs. Wm. Pauly of Everett, Wash., and five grandchildren.
