Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 5, 2008, at the Bailey Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will be at the Midway Cemetery in Hodges, Texas.
Tom (T.I.) lived a ull, rich life.
He was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ and a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 60 years.
Born in Hodges, Texas, he was the eldest son of Thomas Jefferson and Mary Belle Akens.
Tom was employed by The Paramount Theater as the Head Doorman when World War II began.
At the age of 20, he joined the Army Air Corps. He was proud to serve his country in World War II, and again in Korea as a member of the 303 Bomb Group, 8th Airforce, "The Hell's Angels'. He flew combat missions over Germany in a B17.
After completion of his military service, he returned to Abilene, where he met his future wife, Eddy Jo Evans. It was love at first sight. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married in Houston, Texas, on September 9, 1948.
Tom farmed for a short period of time, but his true calling was carpentry. Tom's woodworking skills were known to many. His talents enabled him to leave his mark in the homes of many, ranging from Hollywood actors, luxury high rises, custom built homes, and even tract housing. It didn't matter who the customer was, or how much they paid, they all got Tom's best efforts. Tom's motto was "Whatever you do, be the bet you can be". No matter what Tom was doing, he gave it all he had and left a lasting impression on all of those who met him.
Tom is survived by his wife, Eddy Jo Akens; daughter Linda Hamilton and husband Billy of Houston; daughter Brenda Delcomyn and husband Ronnie, also of Houston; son Thomas (Mike) Akens and wife Jan; son Pat Akens and wife Yvonne; and son Tim Akens and wife Loy, all of Abilene.
Tom was the proud grandfather of 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
His legacy lives on with each of them.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters.
Pallbearers for the service will be his grandsons.
Memorials may be made to Scottish Rite hospital.
Heaven has obtained another good carpenter. Tom will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
