VERNON — Harley Duane Capps, 84, of Vernon, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007, in Wichita Falls.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wilbarger St. Church of Christ with Mr. Jay Hanley officiating. Burial will be in Wilbarger Memorial Park under the direction of Sullivan Funeral Home of Vernon.

Mr. Capps served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was retired from the Department of Public Safety.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Capps of the home; one daughter, Harletta Carthel of Gruver, Texas; one son, Marshall Capps of Vernon; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials can be made to the Thalia Cemetery of Crowell Museum.



Harley Duane Capps, 84, of Vernon, Texas died Saturday, December 22, 2007 in Wichita Falls. Mr. Capps was born June 19, 1923 in Thalia, Texas, son of Harley and Maggie Self Capps. He married Edna Ruth Streit on September 7, 1947. He was a graduate of Crowell High School and attended Abilene Christian University and Texas Tech University where he played football and was a member of the track team. He was a member of the Greenbelt Ham Radio Club, Paint Horse Association, and he helped organize the Wilbarger County 4-H Horse Club. During his retirement he enjoyed working his cattle, raising horses, fishing and the McDonald's Coffee Club. He served in the US Air Force during World War II. He was a grandson of two Foard County Pioneer families, the Self family and the Pigg family. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Capps of the home; one daughter, Harletta Carthel of Gruver, Texas; one son, Marshall Capps of Vernon; four grandsons, Justin and Kade Carthel, Samuel and John Capps; two granddaughters, Kiki Carthel Brabham and Rachel Capps and one great granddaughter, Harlie Brabham. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Karen Capps.
