The "J" is likely incorrect and probably was derived from several Civil War transcription records (see Fold3) which initially used "J" as his first initial (NMI was used), but was subsequently crossed out and an "I" was substituted. However, "The Patroits File" (website which lists the soldiers of Company B, 12th Artillery, CSA) used "J" as his middle initial, therefore to honor his service, "J" is used here on his memorial.
