His middle initial may not be "J," and positively his middle name is not "Johan" as incorrectly assigned by many internet family trees. That error was formed by the misinterpretation of his 1860 and 1910 Fed censuses which were misread by the original transcriber of the detail sheet used by Ancestry.com. The "J" is likely incorrect and probably was derived from several Civil War transcription records (see Fold3) which initially used "J" as his first initial (NMI was used), but was subsequently crossed out and an "I" was substituted. However, "The Patroits File" (website which lists the soldiers of Company B, 12th Artillery, CSA) used "J" as his middle initial, therefore to honor his service, "J" is used here on his memorial.

Son of Joseph Tanner (abt1795/GA-1853/GA) and Mary Ann (____) (abt1800/VA-__).
Husband of Doratha A Brooks Barwick (1834 – 1911); married 29 Apr 1855 in Washington Co., Georgia.

Children: Mary Elizabeth (1855-1940) Thomas W/Right (1858-1941) William Charlie (1862-)
