Born in Anderson County, he was a son of the late Clarence Hanks and Mae Gambrell Hanks Carroway. He was a member of Barkers Creek Baptist Church. He was a retired deputy with Anderson County Sheriffs Department. He was a veteran of the US Navy, World War II.
Surviving are his wife of the home; two sons, Steve Hanks and Scott Hanks, both of Honea Path; a daughter, Linda Vaughn of Honea Path; a brother, Bruce Hanks of Honea Path; a sister, Ruby Thompson of Clemson; two step-sisters, Helen Needham and Ellen Green, both of Charleston; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a son, Joe Hanks and two brothers, Don and Allen Hanks.
