Elmer E. Duff was the oldest child of ZT and Dora Deaton Duff. He was career military in the Army, and was the highest ranking sergeant at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, when the bombing occurred. He was eventually forced to take early retirement when he developed diabetes prior to the end of the war. Elmer never married, and remained at home where he helped care for his parents until his untimely death at age 48.
