Adam Gerard Altepeter, 13, of Crookston, Minnesota, died early Monday afternoon, August 23, 2004, at Bryan LGH-West in Lincoln, Nebraska from injuries received in a one-car accident that occurred that previous Friday morning, near Lincoln. In a selfless act of love, and as a tribute to their son, Adam's parents, Bruce and Cindy, donated many of his organs so that others might have a chance at new life.

Adam was born in Crookston on March 1, 1991, the son of Bruce and Cindy (Karboviak) Altepeter. He was baptized at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and received his First Holy Communion there. He attended kindergarten through sixth grade in the Cathedral Elementary School and sang in the school choir. Adam's seventh grade year was spent at Highland School, and he had recently been very excited about starting the eighth grade at Crookston High School. He and his sister, Erika, a tenth-grader, had been busily planning for his first-day experience at that new school. Adam was as active and into everything as any thirteen year-old could be. He loved to play baseball, basketball, and other sports; and to go bowling and biking with his friends. He also enjoyed spending time on the computer and learning everything he could that was related to technology. Adam had a deep and abiding faith, first instilled in him by his mom and dad. He was an altar server at the Cathedral, and at special church functions he could be found doing whatever needed doing, without having to be asked! That same eagerness to help was also very evident at home and around the neighborhood. Before his Grandpa, Jerry Altepeter, passed away on August 14, 2002, Adam had been very involved in his home health-care. During Jerry's final illness, Adam's many visits were an absolute day brightener. Adam's smile, laugh, gentle nature, and his goodness will be forever remembered and deeply missed by all whose lives he touched. Loving family members include Adam's mom and dad, Cindy and Bruce; and five brothers and sister; Kristi Nelson and her husband, Steve, of Crookston, MN; Brad Altepeter and his wife, Sarah, of St. Michael, MN; Alan Altepeter and his close friend, Kayla Sherry, of Plymouth, MN; Barry Altepeter of Crookston (recently discharged from the U.S. Army at Ft. Hood, TX after serving in Iraq); and Erika Altepeter, at home. He also leaves a niece and nephew, Jenny and Andy Nelson; his grandmother, Lillian Karboviak of Crookston; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives throughout the country; and many, many friends. Adam was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gerald "Grandpa Jerry' and Trudy Altepeter, and Ed Karboviak.
