Edward Wilmas was the second child of Francis Wilmas (1839-1865) and Barbara Haas Wilmas (1842-1880) who were married in 1861. Francis was enlisted in the Civil War and Barbara was reported as his widow. He may have died in battle and there is no record of his burial as yet. Edward grew up in the St. Louis County area and married Lena Fuchs about 1891. They had 6 children: Carl Julius (1893); Edna V (1895) who married Anton Saunders; Milton Frank (1898); Edward John, Jr (1900); Herbert Paul (1903) and Genevieve (1906) who married George Bergen.
After Francis died, Barbara Haas Wilmas married George Philipp Preiss in 1868. They raised Edward Wilmas and his brother Frank along with George's children from his first marriage to Catherine Fink. Barbara and George had 5 children.
