Jerry L. Berkstresser, age 69, of Joplin, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at 11:09 p.m. at Freeman West Hospital after a sudden illness.
Jerry was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Perryton, Texas, son of the late Gwendolyn Cochran Berkstresser and Henry L. Berkstresser, of Joplin. He grew up in Barnett, Mo., where he attended school. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1959, with a degree in agriculture.
He served in the United States Army and with the Reserves.
He was manager of N-Ren Manufacturing in Pryor, Okla., for many years. He was active in the Boy Scouts and was a member of the First United Methodist Church, of Joplin, where he was a member of the Tri-M Sunday School Class.
He married Sharon J. Miller on Dec. 2, 1962, in Excelsior Springs, Mo. She survives. Additional survivors include a son, Brian Berkstresser and wife, Terry, of Webb City, Mo.; a daughter, Becky Brill, of Joplin; his father, Henry L. Berkstresser, of Joplin; and a grandson, Declan. Jerry was a gentle, soft spoken gentleman to his neighbors and community and a kind and tender father and loving husband. The qualities he exhibited live on in his family. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. David Fitzmaurice officiating. Interment will follow in Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary on Friday from 6 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church.
