Clara was the daughter of Walter Maynard Dail and Glennie Garner. On 21 April 1928 in Duplin County, North Carolina, Clara married Fred Alphin, a widower with three young daughters. Clara became a loving mother to these children for the rest of her life. She and Fred had seven children:
