Esteemed Dillon Resident Called By Death Friday
Roy B. Herndon, 73, a Dillon resident since 1922, died early Friday afternoon at the Barrett hospital where he had been a patient for less than a week, his passing, though not unexpected, bringing grief to a wide circle of friends in this community and the Salmon, Idaho, section where he had many admiring friends.
Mr. Herndon was born on a farm near Lebanon, Mo., March 11, 1877, where he lived until 19 years of age when he came west, locating at Salmon where he was first employed at the Ora Cache mine on the divide between Lemhi county, Idaho, and the Big Hole basin. Becoming interested in politics, he was elected and served for a number of years as assessor of Lemhi county, postmaster at Salmon and state representative in the Idaho legislature. He also engaged in business at May, Idaho and moved with his family to Dillon about 28 years ago, being employed in the Waldorf grocery store and serving as deputy clerk of the district court under the late Fred Rife.
In 1909 he was married at Armstead to Edith Scott Decker, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alpheus Decker, pioneer settlers in the Red Rock district.
Besides his widow he is survived by two sons-in-law and daughters, Mr. and Mrs. Burr Smith of Bangkok, Siam, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph R. Smith of Dillon; three brothers in Missouri; one in Oklahoma, two sisters in California; a sister-in-law, Mrs. J. A. Herndon and two nephews, Charles M. and Joseph W. Herndon of Salmon and five grandchildren, Joanne, Robert and Marilyn Smith of Dillon and Grant and Roy Herndon Smith of Bangkok.
He was a member of Dillon lodge No. 16, A.F. & A.M., and the Methodist church and during his long residence here took an active part in the activities of the Beaverhead Mining association.
Largely attended funeral services were held this afternoon in Grace Memorial Methodist church conducted by the Rev. Robert N. Johnstone with Masonic graveside rites at Mountain View cemetery where interment was made.
Pallbearers were George Lane, H. M. Warner, Bernard Williams, Roy Stocker, Otto Sassman and Ben Davis.
