Vernon was born January 26, l930, at Sharon, ND, the son of the late Magnus Olai and Alice Elizabeth (Olson) Gylten. He was a l947 graduate of Sharon High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from l949 to l950 and again from l952 to l953. He was a l956 graduate of Mayville State College and continued his education at North Dakota State University. He married Thelma Hove on August 29, l954 at the West Union Lutheran Church, rural Northwood. He taught school at Badger, Minnesota for 2 years and then farmed near Northwood from l959 to l967. Vernon taught school at Halstad (Norman County West) from l967 until his retirement in l992. He was an avid woodworker, trustee in the Halstad Lutheran Church, member of the American Legion and Halstad Fire Department and worked with the Migrant School Program. His hobbies also included his toy tractor collection. He greatly loved his family, friends and church.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma, Halstad, MN; 2 daughters, Kari (Rob) St. Michel, Rugby, ND, Kim (Rickey) Odejewski, Phoenix, AZ; 3 grandchildren, Evan, Devils Lake, Erin, Bismarck, Ethan, Rugby; and 2 brothers, Wallace (Arlayne) Gylten, Northwood, and Delvin (Doris) Gylten, Northwood.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2006, ll:00 AM, in the Halstad Lutheran Church, Halstad, MN.
