Son of Evermont Ward Hatfield and Julittie Belle Morgan Hatfield.

Married Dixie Stone in 1927, and their children were Edna Lou, Arthur Ray, Greta Flo, and James Blake Hatfield. The family lived at Justice, a few miles from Gilbert, W.Va.

There was a good story, told in the first "Stories About Gilbert, West Virginia..." book, about the family dog, Spot. When Spot heard the church bell ring in the Methodist Church, he attended church. The pastor announced that if he had a congregation full of Spots, the church would be full every Sunday. In addition to that, Spot learned to say his prayers with the children at bedtime. Arthur and Dixie's youngest son, Jim Blake, taught Spot to pray, and Spot would lift his head when the prayer was finished.
