Catherine Dawson Newsum immigrated to the US with mother and brother, Joseph in Dec 1880 docking in New York to join her father, Thomas Dawson in Pennsylvania where her sisters, Eleanor and Gertrude and brother, William were born. Sister, Mary was born in Franklin, King Co., WA. Her sisters, Gertrude and Eleanor were the only ones to survive to adulthood. They went to Wilkes Barre and Scranton, PA to mine and then emigrated to Wash. State in about 1889 to Franklin to Coal Mine. Brother, Joseph died in a mining accident on August 24, 1894, after which the family sued the mining company for burial expenses of their son. The Dawsons were greatly aggrieved of the loss of Joseph; so they quit mining and moved to Seattle. Where they met Hartly Otis Newsum, later her husband. They were married on Dec. 6, 1899 in Seattle, WA. The couple had four children: Emily Josephine b. July 1901, John Hartly b. Sept 30, 1904, Joseph "Joe" Thomas b. 1906 and Gertrude Marie b. 1911. All of her children were born in Seattle. By 1930, Catherine and Hartly Newsum had moved to Los Angeles, CA with their daughter, Gertrude. Their older children opted to stay in Seattle. They opened a restaurant. Gertrude married Gilbert Keppler in Los Angeles and lived there until her death. Her husband, Hartly Otis Newsum died in 1954; they are buried side by side.

It is thought by the family that her name was: Catherine Rebecca Dawson Newsum. I have found her birth certificate and it states that the name was: Mary Catherine Dawson.
