He was a riding instructor in 1917 when he filed a declaration of intention for citizenship. In the 1920 census he is listed as a horse riding instructor. Later he managed a stable in New Bedford. He immigrated to Boston 22 August 1902 from Queenstown, Ireland, on the S. S. Saxonia. He lived in Drumcliff at that time.

Dative of Drumcliffe, County Sligo, Ireland, Mr. Shaw came to the United States in 1902. During his residence here he had managed several of the well known stables, For 18 years he handles the stables of horses owned by the late Miss Ella F. Ivers. In more recent years he had been proprietor of the Buttonwood Riding Academy.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Shaw: a daughter Ella F. Emerson of this city; a son, Samuel Shaw Jr. of New York City; a granddaughter Eleanr Frances Emerson of this city; a brother, Richard Shaw, also of this city, and two half-bothers, William Monds of this city and John Monds of Ireland.
