Son of Thomas Shaw and Mary Spratt Shaw. His parents died in Ireland. Samuel's citizen application lists him as light complexion, 5 feet 9 inches, 164 lbs., brown hair, blue eyes. He was a riding instructor in 1917 when he filed a declaration of intention for citizenship. In the 1920 census he is listed as a horse riding instructor. Later he managed a stable in New Bedford. He immigrated to Boston 22 August 1902 from Queenstown, Ireland, on the S. S. Saxonia. He lived in Drumcliff at that time.

Alternate birth from official Dublin records is 22 October 1882 at 49 Church St., Belfast.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow for Samuel Shaw, 59, of 130 Ash Street, hostler here for many years who died Wednesday after a long period of failing health.
Dative of Drumcliffe, County Sligo, Ireland, Mr. Shaw came to the United States in 1902. During his residence here he had managed several of the well known stables, For 18 years he handles the stables of horses owned by the late Miss Ella F. Ivers. In more recent years he had been proprietor of the Buttonwood Riding Academy.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mary Ann Shaw: a daughter Ella F. Emerson of this city; a son, Samuel Shaw Jr. of New York City; a granddaughter Eleanr Frances Emerson of this city; a brother, Richard Shaw, also of this city, and two half-bothers, William Monds of this city and John Monds of Ireland.
