ATHERTON, Noel Pierce age 86 of Caryville, TN, formerly of Vandalia, passed away Saturday, July 18, 2009 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. He was a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran, retired engineer, and was of the Methodist faith. Preceded in death by son, Noel Howard Atherton, parents, Noel B. and Zena Pierce Atherton, and brothers, Neal and Nuel Atherton, Noel is survived by his wife, Dorothy P. Atherton of Caryville, TN; sons, Billy Atherton and wife, Debra of West Milton, Donald Atherton and wife, Marilyn of Live Oak, TN, Gregory Lee Atherton and Sharon of Xenia, and Michael Atherton and Nancy, of Caryville, TN; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Nola Dechert and husband, Francis, of Miami, OH; brother, Benjamin Atherton and wife, Mary Ann of Delta, OH and several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 pm, Friday, July 31, at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6:00 pm until time of service. A graveside interment will be held at 10:00 am, Saturday, August 1 at Poplar Hill Cemetery, Vandalia. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, 6931 Arlington Rd., Bethesda, MD 20814 or American Diabetes Association, 211 Center Park Dr., Ste. 3010, Knoxville, TN 37922.
