Mrs. Maxine Leatherwood, aged 89 years, passed away July 24, 2009. Esther Maxine Berggren Leatherwood was born at Mead, Nebraska July 18, 1920 to Fred Berggren and
Bertha Anderson Berggren. Maxine grew up in Wahoo, Nebraska, graduating from Wahoo High School in 1938. She attended Luther College in Wahoo, and entered nursing school at Trinity Lutheran Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1942, she worked as a private duty nurse before entering the U.S.
Army Nurse Corps in September 1943. During WWII she was
stationed with the 91st General Hospital in England and Belgium. 1st Lt. Maxine Berggren returned to Kansas City in 1946 and resumed her private duty practice. During the war she met Capt. Arthur Leatherwood and when he returned to the U.S. after serving in the Army of Occupation in Germany they were married in March 1947. During his military assignments she kept the home fires burning in California, Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Arizona. Since Art's retirement from the U.S. Air Force in 1965 they have resided in Austin, Texas. Maxine was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and served the church faithfully wherever she lived, including the Faith and Gethsemane congregations in Austin. Maxine was a life-long caregiver, always concerned with the happiness and welfare of others. She was a Nebraska farm girl who set her sights high and who achieved her educational and professional goals, working diligently for her degree as a Registered Nurse. After her proud service in WWII, she reveled in being a housewife and mother. Maxine was always a lady, and she carried the strength of her humble, hard-working farm roots with her. Her favorite music was DeBussey's "Claire
de Lune" but she looked back fondly and often on that farm in Wahoo, Nebraska and the solid Swedish immigrant stock from which she sprang. Maxine is survived by Arthur, her
husband of 62 years, son Jon and daughter-in-law Joyce of Smithville, Texas, and sister in-law Joann Berggren and family of Iowa. Memorial Services will be held at Austin-Peel & Son Funeral Home, 607 E. Anderson Lane on Thursday, July 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with the Rev. Karl Gronberg officiating. Maxine will be interred alongside her beloved husband in a private ceremony at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio, TX. Memorial gifts may be made to Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 200 W. Anderson Lane,
Austin, TX, Ph 512/836-8560.
