In 1830, after the passing of her father (John Vaughters), Mary, her mother (Caroline Masson Vaughters) and four brothers started for Ohio, from Caroline County, Virginia, making an overland trip across the intervening country. In a cart drawn by one horse they brought all of their household affects. Camping and cooking by the roadside, they made steady progress en-route, even though they made occasional stops along at places where the boys could work to earn a little money. Arriving in Ohio, they located in Jackson County where the death of the mother occurred two years later. Mary married Mark Landrum and settle in Pike County. Her brother Richard settled in Jackson Co., but the other three brothers, John William and Thomas settled in Scioto County.
