Lute was living in Frankfort, KY in 1918 when his sister Julia died. In 1877 he was a farmer & stock raiser on section 22 near Caledonia, IL. He owned 136 acres, then valued at $5,460. He served 4 years plus 3 days in the "late war" (Civil War) in Co. A, 12th I.V.I. He was County Supervisor 2 years and Road Commissioner 5 years.

The 1850 census of Manchester Twp, Boone Co, IL shows Lute living with his parents, stating his birth year as 1842, age 8. Most records show a 1941 birth. He grew up in Boone Co, IL then at age 19 he enlisted in the army at Belvidere, IL on 15 Sept. 1861. He mustered out of service at Benton Barracks, MO (near St. Louis) on 8 Sept.1865. He was captured during his Civil War service and held prisoner for several months. He later received a good-conduct award.

After his military service Lute returned to farming in Boone Co, IL until 1880 when he moved to Douglas Twp, Bremer Co, IA, purchasing a farm of 240 acres on Sec 8 and 10 acres of timber land in Secs 1 & 5.

His wife Mary was from Schenectady, NY. Lute was a Justice of the Peace for Douglas Twp in 1883. Part of his Douglas Twp, Bremer Co, IA farm was 170 acres (N1/2 of SE1/4 & S1/2 of NE1/4 Sec 8 & W1/4 SESE 1-93-13 [NE corner of Douglas Twp]) which he bought from his brother Andrew Whiting, which Andrew had only 8 months before bought from Levi Franklin Goodwin.

Lute and his wife Mary were married May 28, 1866 in Winnebago County, Illinois. They had four known children:
