A native of Watauga County, George Washington Smith was born November 14, 1815. His wife, Mary V. Smith, was born in Rockingham County on October 31, 1822.

Little is known of them until they moved to Surry County in the early 1850's. Several of their children were born in Virginia before 1850, according to the U.S. Census reports. Early records of Surry County state that G.W. Smith transacted a sale of land in 1853.

Wash Smith and his son-in-law John Sparger, began a tobacco factory in the 1870s on Willis Gap Road near Sulphur Springs. This log building is still standing.

Mary V. Smith died in Surry County on January 10, 1891, and is buried in Salem United Methodist Church near Mt. Airy. George Washington Smith died February 12, 1908, at the age of 92. He also is buried at Salem Church.

Their children were: Nathaniel G. Smith (1840-1864) who died in the Civil War; John Tyler Smith (1841-1923); Frances E. Smith (1843-1844); Mary Ann Matilda Smith (1845-1917) who married John Sparger; Eliza J. Smith (1846-); Edney E. Smith (1852-1894) who married James Nick Slawter; Drery E. Smith (1849-1871); Emma A. Smith (1853-1924); and Isabella W. Smith (1860-1890) who married a Banner.
