Burrell also helped foster the development of educational broadcasting throughout the Western States which lead to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, now known as PBS Television.

"Burrell was an avid traveler. In 1948, he applied for a sabbatical, packed up his family and moved to Strathclyde University in Scotland for a year. Later, he went to Rhodes University in South Africa for a year. Since that time, Burrell has traveled much of the globe, whenever he had the opportunity.

"On Saturday, 24 August 1991, Burrell married 'the Love of His Life', Bernice Geraldine (Hawkes) Stevensen in the Logan LDS Temple.
