Mrs. Marian Whannel, 75, widow of Thomas Whannel, who was well known in the Traer community, died at her home in Gladbrook early Monday, October 30, 1967. She has been in failing health the last six months, and had been hospitalized a part of that time, Mrs. Whannel was born Marian Lucille Yetley, a daughter of Irvin J. and Carrie King Yelloy, deceased, early Gladbrook community residents. She attended rural schools in girlhood and was graduated from Gladbrook high school in 1911. She was the teacher of a rural school four years before her marriage to Thomas Whannel, which was at the home of her parents, then living south of Marshalltown, on January 23, 1915. The couple farmed in Crystal and Spring Creek townships before retiring in Gladbrook four years ago.
Preceding her in death were her husband in February, 1965, shortly after the couple had observed their 50th wedding anniversary, two sons and a daughter, her parents and two sisters. She leaves her only son, Wayne, of Beaman, and three granddaughters. Mrs. Whannel was a member of the Gladbrook Evangelical United Brethren church and its Ladies' Aid society, and of the Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary unit. A gift in her memory has been established by friends of the Whannels. Services for Mrs. Whannel were held in the Goettsch-Perrin Funeral Home in Gladbrook at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. W. F. Ellerbeck, pastor. Interment was in Grant township (Amity) cemetery, west of Dinsdale.
