Ralph "Rex, Rip" J. Rexrode, 75, Topeka, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Rexrode worked in civil service at Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka and later at Fort Leavenworth for many years before he retired. He served in the Army and later in the Air Force from August 1948 until he retired in June 1970. He had been stationed at Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, and also in Japan, the Philippines, Greenland, Labrador, California, Louisiana, Topeka and Korea. He was a veteran of the Korean War. Before he joined the service he drove a bread truck and milk route.

He was born Sept. 19, 1924, at Staunton, Va., the son of Charles and Christina Wheeler Rexrode.

He married Susie E. Hatcher on Jan. 31, 1953, at Denver. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Ralph Patrick Rexrode, Colorado Springs, Colo.; three daughters, Shelly S. Rexrode and Brenda S. Stout, both of Topeka, and Ruth Rene Kilgore, Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Mae, Holland, Va., and Virginia Kirby, Staunton, Va.; a brother, Raymond Rexrode, Staunton, Va.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Rexrode was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Eugene Rexrode, in 1984.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mr. Rexrode will lie in state after 8 a.m. Monday at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel where relatives and friends will meet from 7 to 8 p.m.
