Samuel Alexander McCleery, first child of Michael A. and Flora Belle Decker McCleery, was born February 4, 1900, in Odessa Township and passed away at the Veterans Hospital at Grand Island, Nebraska, on November 11, 1977, at the age of 77 years, 9 months, and 7 days.
He attended Lone Tree Grade School and graduated from Mankato High School in 1920. He worked in the Mankato newspaper office for a number of years before going to San Francisco California, where he worked in a shipyard. In December, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army at Camp Roberts, California, and was honorably discharged in February, 1943. After his father's death in 1944, he came back and farmed for his mother until 1955.
On December 30, 1955, he and Lovenia Oliver Dengerink were united in marriage. The last 13 years of his life were spent in Lebanon, Kansas.
Preceding him in death were his father; his mother; youngest sister, Lola, and her husband, Jay Gayle; brother, John McCleery; and a brother-in-law, Frank Dugger of Tucson, Ariz.
Survivors are his wife, Lovenia of Lebanon, Kans.; sister, Ruth Dugger, Tucson, Ariz.; brother, Arthur McCleery, Kennydale, Tex.; sister-in-law, Mrs. John McCleery, Lebanon, Kans., two nephews and eight nieces; a number of great nephews and nieces, many cousins; and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, November 14, 1977, at 2:00 p.m. at the Odessa United Methodist Church with the Rev. Burnis Humphrey, Pastor, officiating. Music was provided by Ruth Obert, Evelyn Manchester, and Joyce Kattenberg. Casket bearers were: Wilbur Obert, Orville LaDow, Rufus Manchester, Chet Sanders, Clyde Manchester, and Kenneth Kennedy. Interment was in the Odessa Cemetery, Lebanon, Kansas.
