Vie was a 1946 graduate of New Hanover High School, and later attended the University of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Colonel Benjamin Mills Washburn, USAF. She was also predeceased by her parents, Simon Warren Sanders and Florence Alley Sanders.
Vie is survived by her three sons, Benjamin Mills Washburn, IV, and wife, Barbara Jones Washburn and their two boys, Benjamin ("Beau") and Andrew; Jonathan Worth Washburn and his two daughters, Julia and Cameron; and Michael Warren Washburn and wife, Jeanne Hill Washburn and their three children, David, John and Sarah.
Vie is also survived by her brother, Robert Macon Sanders and wife, Mary Frances Foy Sanders; their children, Bobby, Elizabeth and Hank; by her sister Florence Sanders ("Flonnie") Jones, widow of Tom Jones; their children Elizabeth ("Sis"), Tommy, Ben, Mary, Katherine and Charlie; by her sister-in-law Betty Sanders, widow of Vie's brother Simon Warren Sanders, and their children, Warren, Linda and Kitty; sister-in-law, Mrs. George S. Boylan; and her children George Boylan and Louise (Muffy) Boylan.
Vie was always thankful for her many friends. Thank you all for the care and love shown over the past years.
Vie is also survived by three dogs: Sox, Midnight and Dawson; who provided her much delight over the past few years.
Vie's life was full of love and happy memories. Searching for seashells; antique hunting and castle tours in Germany, France, Italy and Spain; trips to England and camping across the country to California; serving as Princess in the first Azalea Parade; bicycle tours through northeast United States and Europe; riding her pony as a child on Summer Rest Road and Pembroke Jones lands; making crafts and gifts for friends; singing in the choir; following an Air Force pilot around the world and raising three boys.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church following a brief graveside committal at Oakdale Cemetery.
