Wilhelm Hackbart emigrated to the United States from Schivelbein, Belgard Kreis (county), Pommerania, Prussia in 1856 with his parents - Christian and Friedericke Hackbart - and siblings. Their ship, the Britannia, departed from Hamburg (for Hull, England) on October 1, 1856. After taking a train to Liverpool, they boarded the Franklin King for the voyage to New York City, arriving there on November 14, 1856. They settled in the Town of Wausau (now the Town of Maine), Marathon County, Wisconsin. Wilhelm married Wilhelmina Kniess in 1870. They moved to the Town of Scott, Lincoln County, where the spelling of their name was somehow changed to Hackbarth. Wilhelm established the family farm there on what is now County Road FF. He also gave the corner of his land on which St. John Lutheran Church was built (and on which this cemetery is located).
