Wilhelmina Kniess emigrated to the United States from Wedderwill, Prussia in 1857 with her parents - Friedrich and Friedericke Kniess - and siblings. Their ship, the Heinrich Gustav, departed from Hamburg (for Quebec) on July 1, 1857. They settled in the Town of Wausau (now Town of Maine), Marathon County, Wisconsin.

Wilhelmina married Wilhelm Hackbart in 1870. They moved to the Town of Scott, Lincoln County, and established the Hackbarth farm on what is now County Road FF. They gave a corner of their land for the building of St. John's Lutheran Church (Faith Lutheran Cemetery Scott is all that remains of that church).

Wilhelmina and Wilhelm had seven children: Charles, Anna, Hermann, Heinrich, Martin, Selma, and Herbert.
