Ethel Marie Palmer Stokes was born January 13, 1899, at Red Cloud, Nebraska, the daughter of Elmer and Elizabeth (Wolfe) Wilson. She died on Monday, March 23, 1981, at the Sprague Nursing Home in Red Cloud at the age of 82 years, 2 months and 10 days. She had resided at the Nursing Home for the past year, since her health began failing.

Ethel has been a lifelong resident of the community. She attended the Red Cloud schools. In June of 1916, she was united in marriage to Fay Palmer. This union was blessed with three children. They observed their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1977. Fay died on June 11, 1968. In June of 1969, she was married to Robert Stokes who preceded her in death in July of 1976 (sic - he died on 26 July 1975).

Ethel was a member of the Better Homes Club, the Order Of The Eastern Star, the Women's Club, the Fortnightly Club and the United Methodist Church, all of Red Cloud. She loved gardening and enjoyed and appreciated the beautiful flowers she grew.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Don Wilson; and a sister, Ruth Cole.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Darlene and Charles Reiher, and Phyllis and Stanley Offner of Red Cloud; and a son and his wife, Kenneth and Betty Palmer of Clay Center, Nebraska. There are seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also a sister, Mrs. Josephine Weesner of Indianapolis, Indiana; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and her many friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 1981, from the United Methodist Church with the Reverend M. Manick Samuel officiating. The music was provided by Mrs. Louise Eldred, accompanied by Mrs. Betty Rasser, organist. The pallbearers were Ernest Heinrich, Laird Wolfe, Ernest Lammers, Vernon Krueger, Lester Hansen and Leo Rose. Interment was in the Red Cloud Cemetery with the Simonson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
