A veteran of the United States Army, he was a heavy equipment operator for Ralph Reed and Son Construction in Anderson for twelve years and drove a fuel tanker for Econoline for nine years. He retired from Chrysler Corporation in New Castle in 1998. He had also owned and operated Ed Chriswell's Truck and Auto Repair in New Castle for over 15 years. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #91 in New Castle.
