Funeral services for Mrs. Robert Stokes, 73 of Red Cloud were held at Red Cloud Wednesday morning, February 19 in the United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial was in Red Cloud. The Simonson Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Stokes is the former Bertha Whiteley, sister of the late Con, Walter and Harry Whiteley who lived at Nelson.

Mr. and Mrs. Stokes and another couple from Red Cloud, Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCarty, had gone to Arizona around Christmas time for a winter vacation. The two couples had taken a side trip to Mexico, and were returning to Arizona, when they were involved in an auto accident about three weeks ago. Mr. McCarty was fatally injured while the others were all hospitalized. Mr. Stokes and Mrs. McCarty were able to be released in a few days, but Mrs. Stokes was more severely injured and remained hospitalized at Yuma, Arizona, where she later suffered a stroke and passed away February 14.

Survivors are her husband; a son, Dallas Stokes and a daughter, Mrs. Nathan Guy of Red, and four grandchildren.

Bertha Stokes, one of eight children of William and Martha Whiteley, was born at Nelson, Neb., May 2, 1897 and passed away while vacationing near Phoenix, Ariz., February 15, 1969 at the age of 71 years.

They moved to a farm south of Inavale, Nebr. She received her education in the country school.

She was united in marriage to Robert O. Stokes on December 25, 1921, at her parents home. To this union three children were born, Dallas, Marvel and Richard. They farmed south of Red Cloud until 1940 then moved to their present home in Red Cloud. She shared in her husband's business as bookkeeper.

She was a faithful member of the First Methodist Church and the Faith Rebakah (sic) Lodge.

She was preceded in death by her parents, the seven brothers and sisters and an infant son.

Survivors include her husband, Robert; son, Dallas and his wife, Leona; daughter, Marvel and her husband, Nathan Guy; four grandchildren, Mark, Phil, and Jean Guy and Donna Stokes, also a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 19th, from the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Music was furnished by Mrs. Betty Rasser.

Pallbearers were Duaine Eldred, Dale Engstrom, Clifford Phillips, Emil Pavelka, John Fox and Ralph Ferebee.

Interment was in the Red Cloud cemetery with Simonson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
