~ Lelah Purkiss-Hinton Obituary ~

Former Longview resident Lelah Sue Purkiss-Hinton, 87, passed away Nov. 10, 2008, in Richland, Wash.

She was born Oct. 7, 1921, in Linden, Texas, to Homer H. and Maggie Mary (Penny) Castor. Lelah Sue spent most of her childhood in Arkansas.

On April 5, 1941, she married Chester E. Purkiss in Searcy, Ark., where they farmed near the community of Oak Grove. They moved to Longview in 1948. After their two children, Ernest and Ilene were grown and married, she and Chester became foster parents in 1965 and received more than 100 children into their home until they "retired" in 1973. Chester preceded her in death April 24, 1983.

On May 1, 1993, she married John E. Hinton in Longview. He preceded her in death Oct. 30, 1998.

Lelah Sue loved to quilt, crochet and embroider, making many items with love for family and friends. She was very dedicated to working in the churches she attended over the years, serving in various positions such as director of music, treasurer, Sunday school director and teacher, and church clerk and secretary. Lelah Sue loved to travel, making many trips to Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Indiana, Oklahoma and California to visit relatives and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Ilene Knight (Ken) of Richland; her stepsons, Mel Hinton (Barbara) of La Jolla, Calif., and J.C. Hinton (LaVonne) of Vancouver; a daughter-in-law, Martha Hartman (Phil); her grandchildren, Wade Purkiss (Chris) of Virginia Beach, Va., Weston Purkiss (Nadine) of St. Helens, Ore., Kenneth L. Knight (Angel) of Stevenson, Wash., Brenda Bryan of Kennewick and Ron Knight (April) of Richland; 13 great-grandchildren; her sisters, Beatrice Harper (Bill) of Ringgold, La., and Ruth Bennett of Woodsworth, La.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Dow Castor, James Harvey Castor and Leonard Castor; her sisters, Fern Hubbard and Goldie Hervey; her son, Ernest E. Purkiss; and a grandson, Jeffrey A. Knight.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to service time Saturday. Private interment will take place at Longview Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to Hospice at the Chaplaincy, 2108 W. Entiat Ave., Kennewick, WA 999336, The Gideon's, P.O. Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800, a charity of choice or any church's building fund.
