David Burckhardt and Daniel Burckhardt were twin sons born to Christopher Frederick Burckhardt and his wife, Elizabeth (Hobbs) Burckhardt on March 11th, 1798 at Frederick, Frederick County, Maryland. Their Lutheran father was a 1st generation American who had enlisted with other colonists to fight against Great Britain, in an attempt to win their freedom and establish their own independent nation. He had served as an officer in the American Army and had married their mother on Nov 16, 1780, at the Lutheran Church in Frederick, Maryland, following the worst of the War. I believe they had fifteen children, which included the set of twins. Children were frequently named after parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and older brothers and sisters who had died. It could all be very confusing for those of us trying to establish members of the family later on, especially when over 200 years had passed and the family name had been altered by so many people who didn't understand an accent or read a double ss correctly, etc. I have the following children listed as having been born from the marriage of Christopher and Elisabeth Hobbs Burkhardt:
.George Frederick, b.1782, d.1864 in Howard, Missouri.
.Joshua, b.1784, d.1785
.Polly, b.1786, d.1806 in Kentucky. m.James Richardson.
.Catherine, b.1788, d.1873.m.1st.Joseph Hough, 2nd David Rose Drake. Died in Missouri.
.Joshua Hobbs, b.1789, d.1852.Named after Joshua, child #2
.Nicholas Selman, b.1792, d.1834.
.Christopher, b.1794, d.1796.
.Twin #1, Daniel, b.1796, d.1796.
.Twin #2, David, b.1796, d.1798.
.Christopher F.b.1797, d.1799.Named after child #7.
.Elizabeth Hobbs, b.1799, d.1863.m.James Turner Barnes.
.James R.,b.1804, d.1812.
.James B.,b.1805, d.1873.
.Sellman, b.1807, d.1812.
.Mary Ann "Matilda", b.1809, d.1846.m.William Winn Redman.

Neither twin survived childhood. Both had been born on Mar 11, 1796. Daniel died in August, 1796, and was buried at the church. David died Jan 27, 1798 following a fever he had had while teething. He was probably laid to rest next to his twin at the churchyard adjoining the Lutheran Church. The cemetery no longer exists, nor do the headstones nor the graves or coffins, only the church and the records remain. The church was expanded over the old churchyard in the mid 1800's. The remaining Burckhardt children removed with their parents to Kentucky in 1805, then to Missouri in 1809.
{My great, great, great grandfather and grandmother were married at that church in 1816. John Burkhart was 29 yrs. of age and Rebecca Baltzell was 16 years of age. Christopher Frederick was John's uncle, although John had changed the spelling of his last name. His brother, George Peter Burkhardt (1751-1830), was John's father.}
