John Wayne Shows, Jr.

March 25, 1941 - May 9, 2007

John Wayne Shows, Jr. was born to John Wayne Shows, Sr. and Hester Elaine Hendrix on March 25, 1941 in Bay City, Matagorda County, Texas.

While he was a teenager, John, his mother and sister delivered the Houston Post newspaper for five years. They had to wake up at 2:00 a.m. each day to get all of the newspapers delivered before school.

John was a graduate of Cypress-Fairbanks High School in 1959. After spending a year at Lon Morris Junior College, he decided to change the direction of his life and serve his country. He joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves for seven years and served a portion of that time in San Antonio, Texas. He then became a pipe-fitter working out of Local 211 in Houston.

In 1981, John moved to Dime Box, Texas with three of his children where he began the new life he loved so much.

On March 27, 1992, John married Virginia Cottrell Hervey. He and Virginia brought their two families together to start their life together in Dime Box.

John became a Christian as a child. He was a member of the local Baptist churches in Fairbanks, Magnolia and Burton and was attending First Baptist Church in Dime Box at the time of his death.

He served on the Lee County Junior Livestock Board of Directors for many years and also the Dime Box Water Board. He continued to be a member of the Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department, the Dime Box Lions Club and the Lee County tax Appraisal Board. He served as a County Election Precinct Judge and was involved with many other community and youth organizations.

John is survived by his wife Virginia, son Jeff Shows and wife Kimberly of Dime Box, son Danny Shows of Brenham and special friend Valerie Stille, daughter and son-in-law Kathleen and Allen Hoover of Boerne, daughter Jaime Norris if Irmo, SC, step-sons and wives: Darden and Shannon Hervey of Dime Box, Lamar and Kimberly Hervey of College Station and Aaron and Michelle Hervey of Ledbetter, grandchildren: Kacey and Kelly Shows, Allison, Payton and Layne Hoover, Ethan Shayne and Jetta Shows and Kaitlyn and Savannah Norris. Kellyn and Stewart Hervey and Lawton Hervey.

He is also survived by his mother Elaine Shows of Ledbetter and mother-in-law Alene Cottrell of Dime Box, sister Pat and brother-in-law Jerry Griffith of Davilla, nieces Angela Griffith of Houston, Chris and Courtney Shiller and nephew Chase Griffith all of Davilla, brother-in-law Terry Cottrell and nieces Catherine and Jamie Cottrell of Austin. John was preceded in death by his father J.W. Shows, Sr.

Memorials may be made to the Dime Box Volunteer Fire Department, The First Baptist Church of Dime Box, the Hranice Cemetery, the Lee County Junior Livestock Show and St. John Lutheran Church of Dime Box.

He enjoyed ranching and was a workaholic who was always early and loved to laugh.
