George Devol Padgitt was born on January 24, 1880 in Waterford, Washington County, Ohio. He was the second of three children born to William Gabriel and Orena (Phillis) Padgitt.

He was raised in Waterford with his siblings, where he received an education.

He enlisted in the United States Military on August 28, 1900 at Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio. He was sent to Alcatraz Island, California to be a Cook and Laborer. He held the rank of Private and was in the 13th Infantry Regiment, Company F. He was discharged on August 28, 1903 at Alcatraz Island. He re-enlisted on February 22, 1904 in California and was discharged on May 14, 1904.

When he enlisted he was 5' 11 3/4" tall, had blue eyes and dark brown hair.

He returned to Washington County after his time in the service. He rented a house in Marietta located at 612 9th Street.

He married Laura Elizabeth Smith, daughter of John C. and Christiana Diane (Remmele) Smith, on January 10, 1906 in Washington County, Ohio. They were united in marriage by Rev. W.E. Brinkman, Pastor of the Lutheran Church.

Together George and Laura had 5 children: George Devol (1906-1988), Lewis W. (1908-1989), Frank Charles (1911-1986), Edward Woodrow (1912-1992) and Eugene Paul (1925-1995).

George worked as a Plasterer his entire, an occupation he inherited from his father.

In 1945 he suffered a Cerebral Hemorrhage that left him paralyzed in a wheel chair for the rest of his life. This eventually led to his death on December 9, 1953 in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. He is buried at Valley Cemetery in Reno, Ohio.

At the time, he was survived by his wife, brother, 5 sons and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and 2 grandchildren.
