OAKLAND -- Irene Jiles, age 91 of Oakland, passed away at 3:18 p.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 15 at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, with Reverend Don Funk officiating. Burial will be in Gwinn Cemetery, north of Oakland. Friends may call after noon on Tuesday at Standard Funeral Home, where the family will be present for visitation from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
Irene was born on August 10, 1917 in Douglas County, the daughter of Jesse and Fay Gwinn Davis. She had lived most of her life in Douglas County, the last 65 years just north of Oakland. She attended several country schools in the Oakland area before graduating from Oakland High School in 1934. Survivors include one daughter, Lucretia Jiles of Champaign; one son, Bob Jiles of Oakland; one grandson, Brad Sempsrote of Mattoon; and special friend Barbara Babbs of Ashmore. She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Betty Sempsrote, three brothers Merrel, Max and Verlan Davis, and one sister Vivian Burris.
Irene devoted her life to caring for her home and her children. She was a member of the Decatur Quilt Guild and the Oakland Quilting Group. She loved to quilt, cook, and flower garden. Irene also enjoyed her bluebirds and hummingbirds. A memorial fund is being established for either the Oakland-Hindsboro Charitable Foundation, or the Oakland VFW.
