James was born to James Riddle Sanders & Martha "Patsy" Woodson Smith, brother of Mary Elizabeth Sanders (Dr. Abner "Frank" Francis Spencer); Eliza Jane Sanders (Elijah D. Foster); John Carr Sanders; Rev. Alexander Smith Sanders (Mary Vesta Shaw); Jason Lewis Sanders (Nora Piercy); Alzora "Alice" Barnes Sanders (T. Rice Smith); Martha Clay Sanders (John VanDeren)

James Riddle Sanders (born Oct 10, 1799 Grafton, N.H. died Apr 18, 1871 Millersburg, Bourbon Co., Ky., being son of Ezra Sanders 1777 NH/1859 N.H. & Elizabeth "Betsy" Carr 1780/1861, James R Sanders was married 3 times: (1 Rosa Ware, no children (2 Jan 22, 1829 Eliza Smith who died same time as their infant child, (3 Oct 1830 Martha Smith born Oct 26, 1814 Bourbon Co., Ky d Aug 2, 1864 Millersburg, Bourbon Co., Ky dau of Alexander Smith & Polly Porter Barnes, son of Alexander Smith & Jane Miller, son of John Smith.

He married Susan Augusta Pike on September 19, 1867 in Jacksonville, IL. James hailed from Millersburg, Kentucky and worked as a special agent of the Chicago and Alton Railroad at Delavan, IL from 1869 through 1888. He also participated in the real estate and fire insurance business in Bloomington after he and his family moved to town on November 7, 1902.

He and Susan had four children:two sons, Harold Pike Sanders and Royal Woodson Sanders; and one daughter Bernadine Sanders, who died at the young age of fifteen due to diabetes; and a fourth child who died in infancy.
