John S. Grant Jr.

John Samuel Grant, Jr., 87, died Sunday, July 19, 2009, at St. Dominic Memorial Hospital in Jackson.

Mr. Grant, a native of Lee County, was born in Plantersville, Mississippi, on April 27, 1922. He was the son of John S. Grant, Sr. and Dora Towery Grant. After high school, he attended Copiah Lincoln Jr. College, where he ran on the undefeated 4 X 100 relay track team. He later attended Mississippi State College prior to enlisting in the United States Army Air Corps.

He served his country as an officer and pilot in the Ninth Air Force in the European Theater during the final years of World War II. He remained in Europe after the war and piloted a C-47 Dakota in support of the United States prosecution during the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials.

When his military service concluded, Mr. Grant completed his studies at Mississippi State College in 1948, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business. He was a lifelong fan and supporter of M.S.U. athletics. He met Caroline Barwick of Braxton at Copiah Lincoln Jr. College, and they were married on March 13, 1949.

He began his business career in New Orleans with B. F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Company, and later was employed as manager of General Electric Credit Corporation in Jackson. In 1960, he opened the Western Auto Associate Store in Richland, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. He was a past president of the Rankin County Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Grant was a long-time member of Alta Woods United Methodist Church, where he served as a trustee and member of the administrative board. He also was a member of the Discussion Sunday School Class.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Evelyn Grant Carter of Jackson; and his brother, William Towery Grant of Plantersville.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Melissa Caroline Grant of Braxton; son, John Samuel Grant III (Julia) of Pearl; daughters, Melissa Ann Grant Ridgway (Richard) of Jackson and Caroline Grant Griffin (James) of Jackson; and grandchildren, Richard Lewis Ridgway, Jr., Melissa Caroline Ridgway Hogan, John Samuel Grant IV, Samuel Grant Ridgway, Annalissa Johnson Grant, Rebekah Ann Griffin, Anna Bess Ridgway, John William Griffin and Stephen James Griffin; and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. tonight at Wright and Ferguson on High Street. Services will be held at Alta Woods United Methodist Church on Tuesday, July 21, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. and burial will follow at Braxton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alta Woods United Methodist Church, 109 Alta Woods Blvd., Jackson, MS 39204.
