He enlisted as a Private in the army, 6th Infantry Company K, on July 3, 1837 in Baltimore, Maryland. He fought in the Second Seminole War under Colonel Zachary Taylor. Elias died December 25, 1837 of wounds received in action at Okechobee(sic) Lake, Florida. He was originally interred at Lake Okeechobee and reburied 1842 at St. Francis Cemetery*, St. Augustine, Florida, now St. Augustine National Cemetery.

*Remains of soldiers killed during the Seminole Wars were disinterred from across the state of Florida and reburied there. Three large pyramids were erected over the mass grave to honor these men.

**June 1838 letter, written to J.R. Poinsett, Sec. of War, on behave of wife and children of Elias Rose:

Warrenton, VA June 16th 1838
Sir,
At the instance(sic) of a relative of Elias Rose a private in Company K 6th Infantry I take the liberty of inquiring whether any return has been made to your Department showing the fate of said Rose. He left a wife & children in this county (Fauquier) and they have not heard from him since the battle between Col Taylor & the Seminoles. It is feared he was slain in that encounter as the newspaper account represented that Company K 6th Infantry was very much cut up by the Indians.
Your immediate answer will much oblige the relatives of Mr. Rose.
Very respectfully
Jos. Horner
The Hon:
J.R. Poinsett
Sec. of War
