Dr. Hugh C. Bennion, 76, the retired Ricks College Dean of Faculty, died December 8, 1982 after collapsing while at Ricks.
He was born September 14, 1906 at Farmington, Utah to Edwin T. and Mary Clark Bennion. He received his bachelor of science degree from Utah State University in 1931 and his master of science degree from Iowa State University in 1939.
He married Rachel Parrish September 4, 1930 at the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. She preceded him in death, May 22, 1954.
He served at Hill Air Force Base at Ogden, Utah as an employee counselor and as Civilian Director of Employee Counseling and Chief of Employee Relations during World War II. He received his doctor of education degree from Oregon State University in 1950.
He also attended the University of Oregon, the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Idaho. He taught at Iowa State and was a teacher and administrator at Ricks College from 1931 to his retirement in 1973, teaching agriculture, physical, and biological sciences, psychology, theology, and education, heading the agriculture, biology, and chemistry departments, and most recently serving as Dean of Faculty.
He married Marjorie Owens, June 10, 1955 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
He was an active member of the LDS Church, a member of Rotary International and a past president of the Rexburg club, and served as chairman of the Madison County Community Chest Drive.
He received a Danforth Foundation Award, was a member of the American Society for the Advancement of Education, Phi Delta Kappa, and Gamma Sigma Delta. He was chairman of the Committee on the Institutional Research for the Northwest Junior College Association and a member of the national committee for establishing criteria for evaluating associate degree programs in nursing education. He was listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Education.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Merle (Jean) Johnson, Hesperia, California; two sons, David A. Bennion, Sandy, Utah, and R. Craig Bennion of Redlands, California; two sisters, Mrs. Leland (Helen) Monson, Ogden, and Mrs. J.B. (Melba) Decker, Provo, Utah; five brothers, Donald C. Bennion, Palo Alto, California; Owen C. Bennion, Farmington, Utah; Dr. Theodore C. Bennion, Provo; Hardin C. Bennion, Los Angeles, and Paul C. Bennion, Roy Utah, and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Rexburg LDS East Stake Center with Bishop James F. Shirley officiating. Burial will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
