Civil War Union Officer. A native of New York City, Morris studied at the Harvard Law School before moving to San Francisco to start his own practice. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Second California Cavalry, serving first as an adjutant on the regimental staff and shortly after, First Lieutenant in Company I. After serving with distinction with the California Column's march to Arizona, he resigned in May 1862 in order to accept a commission to the rank of Captain and served as Assistant Quartermaster of United States Volunteers until the end of the war. On March 13, 1865, he was brevetted Major for his service during the war. In 1880, Morris was appointed a special agent for the Treasury Department and sent to Alaska. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed Collector of Customs in Sitka, Alaska and would serve as such until his death. Morris is the son of Union Bvt. Major General William W. Morris and the great-grandson of Declaration of Independence signer, Lewis Morris.
