The 1850 US Census for Freedom, Washtenaw Co., Michigan, enumerated 15 Oct 1850, has S. S. Peckins, age 44, farmer, born in Mass., with Hannah, age 42, born in NY; Elpha, age 18, farmer, born in NY; and Marietta, age 12; Hannah, age 9; Mary, age 2; Leonard Kent, age 18, farmer, born in Mich; and Cornelia Kendall, age 22, born in NY.

The 1860 US Census for Freedom, Washtenaw Co., Michigan, enumerated 11 June 1860, has Samuel Pickens, age 54, farmer, born in Mass., with Hannah, age 51, born in New York; Elijah, age 28, born in New York; Marietta, age 22; Hannah, age 18; and Mary, age 11, all born in Mich.

Jumping ahead --- A Michigan Certificate of Death reports the death, in Leslie, Ingham Co., on May 5, 1921, of Myrtie J Bacon, divorced, wife of Asa Bacon; date of birth March 23, 1862, age 59 years, 1 month, 12 days; occupation: housewife, employer: left blank, place of employment: Grass Lake, Michigan; name of father: Mr. Jeffords, birthplace unknown; name of mother: Meritta J Peckins, birthplace: Washtenaw Co., Michigan; informant: Harley C. Adams of Lansing, Mich. {Mertie's half-brother}.

Almost 2 ½ years after Myrtie's birth, Marietta marries William C. Adams: Minister Davidson states: "This is to certify that I have solemnized the rite of Holy Matrimony between Mr. Wm C. Adams of Franciscoville, Jackson County, state of Michigan, aged 27 years, and Miss Marietta J. Peckins of the same place aged 25 years, … . Done in Grass Lake [Jackson Co.] on this the 31st day of August AD 1864."

We note that Marietta here uses her birth surname, suggesting that she has not been married before, to a "Mr. Jeffords" or anyone else. This is confirmed by Myrtie's own marriage record, 16 years later: Michigan Marriages, 1868-1925, reports the marriage, Oct 2, 1880, in Grass Lake, Jackson Co., of Asa Bacon, age 23, of Grass Lake, born in Henrietta, also in Jackson Co., farmer, to Myrtie Peckins, age 18, of Franciscoville, born in Franciscoville. Myrtie is using 'Peckins', her mother's maiden name, as her own maiden name, not 'Jeffords', the name of her father. Evidently, Myrtle's mother and father were never married.

Adams, Boarder, age 71, married 2nd 45 years, born in Michigan, parents born in New York. This "Mary J. Adams" has to be Marietta. Everything but the "Mary" fits perfectly --- except that here she says she is on her 2nd marriage, while we have good reason to believe she was only officially married once!
