She grew up in Stockbridge, MA. and later moved in 1904 to Springfield, MA. with her mother and sister, Rachel. It was here that she finished her education at the MacDuffie School for Girls. She never married and spent some years dealing with mental illness at a sanatorium in North Carolina. She improved by 1942 and later authored a book in 1947 about her childhood in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, entitled "A Stockbridge Childhood."
